Based on true story, Lao Dou tells the story of Ah Guai, a struggling father who survives by selling pirated VCDs on the streets. Constantly evading the police and trapped in poverty, Ah Guai turns to illegal gambling in hopes of earning quick money to provide for his family. However, his actions gradually push away the people he loves most—his wife, Xiao Qi, and his daughter, Ling Ling. When Ah Guai is arrested for gambling, years of disappointment and resentment finally erupt. Ling Ling reveals that she once witnessed her father running from the police and confesses that what pains her most is not their lack of wealth, but seeing him live in fear and dishonesty every day. Confronted by his family's heartbreak and reminded of happier memories, Ah Guai reaches his emotional breaking point and begins to question the life he has led. Three months later, Ah Guai chooses redemption. Ten years on, he has rebuilt his life as the owner of a coffee shop, leaving behind his past of crime and escapism. Lao Dou is a heartfelt tribute to fathers whose silent sacrifices often go unnoticed, exploring themes of redemption, family love, dignity, and second chances.
Réalisation
Leong Wing Zi is a filmmaker from Malaysia and a Bachelor of Communication (Honours) in Broadcasting student at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT). "LaoDou" marks her directorial debut and first filmmaking experience. Through "LaoDou" , she explores the complexities of fatherhood, family relationships, and redemption. The film pays tribute to fathers whose sacrifices often go unnoticed, while reflecting on dignity, the consequences of life choices, and the possibility of a second chance.
