À propos du film
Girne: The Heart of the Mediterranean is a two-year documentary project dedicated to recording the history, people and collective memory of Kyrenia. Produced through an extensive and meticulous fieldwork process, the film brings together 85 interviews and footage from more than 75 locations across Girne. With 334 participants appearing throughout the documentary, it presents the city through the memories and personal stories of the people who have lived its history. One of the film’s most distinctive features is its extraordinary span of generations. The documentary brings together Girneliler born in 1929 and 1930, people from every generation that followed, and the youngest participant, born on 23 February 2023. Their presence on screen creates a rare visual record of nearly a century of the city’s living memory. Through these voices, Girne emerges not only through its places, but through the people who gave those places meaning. Personal memories, family stories, traditions and everyday experiences come together to reveal the city’s social and cultural fabric and the Cypriot Turkish heritage that has been carried across generations. The scale of the production reflects the collective nature of the project. Filming took place across the city, including aerial images from 27 different locations, while 334 Girneliler became part of the documentary’s visual record. Even the closing credits include photographs of 67 Girneliler, reinforcing the film’s sense of community and collective memory. Directed by Derya Atamer and produced by Ali Atamer, the documentary also features narration by Turkish voice artist Zeynep Özden Ayyıldız. Its original music, Girne Zeybeği, was specially composed for the film by Rauf Kasimov, adding another layer of emotional and cultural depth to the story. Ultimately, Girne: The Heart of the Mediterranean goes beyond documenting a city. It preserves the voices, faces, places and memories that together form Girne’s cultural heritage — creating a lasting visual archive of a city and the generations that have carried its story forward.
