It has been forty-seven days since Jieun moved to Sydney. Surrounded by boxes that remain unpacked, she is beginning a new life with her husband and their baby daughter, Haneul. When her English-speaking husband leaves on a business trip, Jieun must manage daily life alone. Buying groceries, collecting a parcel and ordering a coffee all become encounters with an unfamiliar language. Unable to understand, she smiles and pretends that she does. It is how she has learned to cope. Then, at three in the morning, Haneul’s temperature reaches 39°C. Jieun’s husband does not answer his phone, and there is no one nearby she can ask for help. Panicking, she turns to NOA, an AI-powered baby-care app. She tries to ask for help in English but cannot find the words. Finally, she switches the app to Korean and receives directions to a nearby emergency department, along with assistance arranging transport. Even after reaching the hospital, rapid English and unfamiliar medical terminology stand between Jieun and the help her baby needs. Just as she becomes overwhelmed and loses the ability to respond, her husband finally calls. He explains that Jieun’s English is limited and asks the nurse to speak slowly, one question at a time. But it is Jieun—not her husband—who answers the questions about her baby’s name and temperature. As morning approaches, Haneul’s fever begins to come down. Jieun still does not fully understand the language of this new country, but for the first time she accepts that when she does not understand, she can ask again. On her forty-seventh day in Sydney, the unfamiliar city begins to feel a little less foreign.
