About the film

Semi-Detached is a 5 minute 14 second experimental film conceived alongside a photographic self-portrait series in a recently vacated 1960s semi-detached house in Trowbridge, Wiltshire. Given several weeks alone in the house before it was sold and renovated, Meg Mosley transformed its rooms into carefully constructed scenes, responding to the traces of a life left behind. Costume, objects, colour, set design and performance are used to create a world suspended between reality and imagination. The film moves through fragments of domestic life, using split-screen to draw attention to gestures, objects, glances and moments of psychological tension. The divided imagery echoes both the architecture of the semi-detached house and the emotional fragmentation within it. Set to Violetta Villas’ Polish song Do Ciebie, Mamo (“To You, Mother”), the film explores longing for home, family and what has been lost. The familiar becomes strange and emotionally heightened as memory, performance and imagined narrative become intertwined.
