After raising Qingshuang for nineteen years, her father demands repayment: in three days, she is to leave in a bridal sedan chair for Chief Yamamoto. The image of a female mantis devouring her mate becomes a dark counterpoint to marriage as obligation, while a remembered maxim about shattered jade frames a struggle over dignity and sacrifice.
