In Doñana's olive groves, rural crews preserve the traditional green olive harvest (verdeo): an ancestral hand-picking heritage defying modern intensive mechanization.
About the film
In southwestern Spain, the traditional olive grove acts as both a crucial ecological buffer and a living repository of human heritage bordering the wetlands of Doñana National Park. Chronicles of the Green Harvest (Crónicas del Verdeo), an installment of the Memoria Viva documentary series produced by Ecoperiodismo for Infodoñana, documents the table olive harvesting campaign through the ancestral method of ordeño: hand-picking each olive directly from the branch to prevent cellular bruising and premature enzymatic oxidation on delicate varieties such as Manzanilla and Gordal. By closely following an intergenerational harvesting crew across the agricultural landscapes of the Lower Guadalquivir and El Condado, the film examines the precise biomechanics of manual harvesting—the balance on the traditional tripod ladder (castillejo) and the use of the harvest chest-basket (macaco)—while rescuing an endangered agrarian oral glossary. The documentary addresses critical structural tensions: the absence of generational renewal, the advance of super-intensive monocultures, and groundwater depletion affecting Doñana's ecosystems, asserting hand-harvesting as an essential intangible cultural heritage and a protective agroforestry refuge for regional birdlife.
