Acerca de la película
‘A Love Letter to My Body’ is an intimate visual celebration of the lived experience of my body, with original score ‘Prelude to Unfamiliar Engine#4’ by Grant Olding. The poem reflects on the journey of the body; motherhood, loss, ageing, resilience and love. It challenges traditional perceptions of the body and the value placed upon it. The film uses a kaleidoscope of self portraits from photography, film and timelapse sequences, created using an iPhone, over two days at Impostor Studios in Ebbw Vale. Saturated blocks of colour and costume offer changing perspectives of the body; concealing and revealing, reflective and playful. A juxtaposition of fashion/editorial imagery and personal vulnerability, use the language of colour to convey the private world of the poet. The viewer is invited to consider clothing, appearance and identity as layers, armour, resistance, decoration, transformation, play and reclamation. The visual experimentation is informed by an exploration of synaesthesia and the sensory and embodied experience of neurodiversity. Embodiment can be perceived through film, in ways that are difficult to articulate through language alone. The body is seen as an archive, the poem addresses individual parts of the body as repositories of memory and experience. This film began as an exploration of the gaze and became a love letter, allowing me to be the artist, subject, author, muse, director and editor of my story. The poem continues to provoke strong and varied responses from live audiences. In an age when bodies are policed, legislated and politicised, we receive many messages about what we should value or strive for. I recognise my privilege as a white able bodied person; I also recognise and the prejudice and violence I have faced as a woman, a mother, and recipient of care. I honour the sharing of the challenges of invisible disabilities, body dysmorphia, eating disorders, and access to health care. The complexities and nuance of which, is often simplified by news and advertising content via social media platforms and sensationalist divisive media. The film forms part of my wider poetry film and live spoken word practice, with visuals designed for large scale projection alongside live performance ~ creating immersive, multisensory experiences. ‘A Love Letter to My Body’ is a gentle and compassionate gift to self, in dialogue with one’s own body. What would yours say? Music ‘Prelude to Unfamiliar Engine#4’ from the Hushtakk series by UK Tony nominated composer/lyricist Grant Olding. The music for this film was generously gifted by Grant Olding, following a serendipitous meeting with the Hay Shantymen which resulted in the gifted poetry film ‘He Knew’. Grant describes the piece as ‘a one synth improvisation exploring textures and playing with tape speeds on the Teenage Engineering OP-1 Field.’
